There is no Monday Marriage Moment post for today as we took the weekend off to celebrate. Happy Easter everyone!

Last year we were honored to photograph Christina and Cole’s wedding at the fabulous Palace at Somerset Park. This venue was absolutely gorgeous and the staff were some of the kindest we have worked with. We were excited about this beautiful location and were eager to utilize the grounds for photos. As you can tell from the Christmas wreath, Christina and Cole’s wedding was in December, so needless to say it was pretty darn cold out. And during the winter months it gets dark early, which meant by the time we reached the venue the sun was down and there was no natural available light. (we had already taken some daylight shots before leaving for The Palace) We still wanted to take a few photos outside to take advantage of this great location and Christina and Cole were all for it. Paul and I went outside and set up a wireless remote speedlight (also known as a flash) and dialed in the light settings. Once everything was ready we brought out the happy couple, so they only had to brave the cold for a few minutes, and we centered them in front of the grand entrance below the Christmas wreath. I (Carolyn) ducked behind Christina and Cole holding the speedlight just below their shoulders as Paul snapped the photo. Here is a diagram to clarify…
Paul made sure that they were framed just right in the photo; romantic pose, framed by the doorway and centered against the building. In this photo all of the light is coming from either the building or from our speedlight. That means all the light is behind them and none in front. This made it easy to get that great silhouette. You can see just a little of Christina’s gorgeous dress and bouquet because the white of her dress carries the light around her. So Paul had to make sure the speedlight’s settings were just right so that the light would not wrap around too much (which would lose the silhouette effect as you would see too much detail) and not too little (to make their silhouettes crisp). The result is a photo that is powerful and dramatic, while also romantic and intimate.
Taken with 24-70mm lens at 24mm, f/3.5 , 1/80 sec., ISO25. Remote flash triggered using Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 Units (Nikon Version)
There are other ways to use speedlights for backlighting as well, which we also used during this same wedding at the reception. In the above photo, we ONLY lit Christina and Cole from behind, which is how we got the silhouette effect. However, for most reception photos we want to be able to see the faces and expressions of the people we are photographing. So if we are going to use backlighting, we also want to light them from the front as well. There are various ways to do this, but for a reception we use ambiant (available) light from the lights in the venue and adjust our settings accordingly (listed below). Then for the backlighting we use the speedlight. During part of the reception I put down my camera and picked up the speedlight which was wirelessly triggered by Paul’s camera. Paul photographed the cake cutting, and bouquet and garter tosses while I held the speedlight. We have to work together to make sure the light is strategically placed. We usually keep the light hidden behind our subject (i.e. bride, groom, guests, people dancing) which creates a rim lighting effect. This gives the photo depth and drama.
The following photos were taken with 24-70mm lens at f/4, 1/160 sec., ISO-5000
I love that you can see all the little specks of cake flying towards Christina’s face as Cole gets her!
I hope this all was clear and offered some insight! Please let us know what you think!

-We love marriage just as much as we love weddings. Take a moment to prepare not just for the wedding, but for the marriage-
Have you seen this YouTube video (below) that went viral? It’s no surprise that people want to watch a laughing baby, its like contagious happiness. And that same contagious happiness is such a gift in marriage. As I mentioned in a previous MMM post, according to Drs. Les and Leslie Parrot having fun together is one of the best ways to build passion. And I think laughing together is the best – watching our favorite comedian, Brian Regan, watching our son be silly or laughing at ourselves. I can often get super silly, make a fool of myself, and crack myself up, enjoying every minute of it. Other times I need a little help remembering not to take myself too seriously and Paul is great at reminding me. Paul recognizes those moments when I need a little comic relief and knows just what to say to lighten my spirit. It’s awesome, and its one of the things I love about him. Even though, I have to admit my initial response is usually Hey, I’m being serious here. No laughing! but it does not take long to give in to laughter and fun. I’m also impressed by seeing how other couples laugh together. When they tell stories about an argument and they are able to look back in hindsight and just laugh because they easily forgive, move on, and enjoy the silliness of life. Laughter and general happiness is contagious, so go spread it around- especially to your mate!

We are so happy for Anna and Andrew to spend the rest of their lives together! We are honored to have spent the day with this wonderful couple, roaming through Princeton’s beautiful campus capturing their love. They have spent many days and evenings taking walks through the campus, and it is also the place where Andrew popped the question! It was so much fun photographing them, not just because Andrew is Paul’s brother and Anna our soon to be sister-in-law, but because they so easily make each other laugh and smile and are simply filled with love and joy. Congratulations Anna and Andrew, we cannot wait for your wedding!

These are some of my favorites from the shoot, I love how they show the carefree and joyful spirits of this wonderful couple.
Anna and Andrew spontaneously set themselves up in this Romeo and Juliet-like pose as they were goofing around having fun. Andrew jumped up the 7 foot wall to give his bride-to-be a kiss and it was just too cute not to capture!
I can hear Anna and Andrew laughing as I look at this photo! Pure joy.
These photos were taken in one of the many beautiful little alcoves on the campus, where they ran for cover from the rain just before Andrew popped the question!

Wow! Wow.
-We love marriage just as much as we love weddings. Take a moment to prepare not just for the wedding, but for the marriage-
One of the pages I have bookmarked in my copy of Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts by Drs. Les & Leslie Parrot has the heading “Cultivate Passion”. Passion is one of those misunderstood concepts that everyone has a different definition for, but we really believe it is simply an intense (positive) emotion towards each other that can easily be re-boosted when we reconnect. In their book the doctors say that in order to have romance and passion, you need to not just feel attractive but special. So how do we do that? They beautifully discuss each of the following topics, but since I am a type-A personality, I prefer bullet points and lists. Here are their awesome tips:
1. Affection
Affection aids in romantic feelings. Little things like touching his/her back or arm as you pass by, giving a random kiss or hug, holding hands, and of course, cuddling!
2. Positive Experiences
Associating each other with positive experiences we have together is always a good thing. Dating, having fun, going out to dinner, taking walks, going on vacation, ice skating, watching movies, whatever it is you enjoy together.
3. Give Compliments Everyday
Who doesn’t love a compliment? Compliments make us feel special. Anything from “That shirt looks nice on you” to “You are an incredible man/woman and I am so blessed to share my life with you.”
It is SO great to have a list of ideas like this to come back. Even though Paul and I actually did do this stuff before reading it, we do not always remember to do it as often as we would like to. So I love being able to refer back and remind myself of these super simple, easy to implement, and can-start-doing-right-now passion boosters.
